can anyone recommend a good web designer who doesn't cost the earth!!!

Hi Joanne,

A website can be like a good wardrobe - you need to make a solid investment to get something stylish that will last for years.

Web design can be expensive - but you need to think about exactly what you need. If you just want something simple, you could try a blogging platform like blogger.com or wordpress.org. Both sites allow you to use your own domain name. And it's all free. There are many "hacks" or tips you can access to customise the site to your own liking.

However, if you want something more serious, perhaps try www.elance.com . It's essentially an auction site - you can list what you want, and how much you want to pay, and interested web designers can bid to do the job.

Thankyou natalie, your right I dont wont to go at this half heartly I really wont this to work so I can get back in the game !!! looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and keep pinching those pennys, I'll give that web site a go and see comes of it. life would be so much easyer if i wasn't a wont it yesterday kind of girl !!!! thanks for the lead natalie

Don't worry, I'm the same - always wanting everything yesterday!

Are you trying to set up an e-business? Because another tip would be to have a look at other sites similar to what you're hoping to do. That way, you can pick and choose the features you like before you get started.

From my own perspective, the clean, direct and simple to navigate websites work the best.

Hi natalie, yes I'm trying to set up an online book shop and simple is definatly me speed, so far I have visited just about every book shop an taken soooo many notes that I cant see my desk, an then I started looking at business registration an ABN's and tax rules the pro's an con's of, to have or not to have, not to mention the thousands of web designers, I swear natalie I think I've devopled eye strain !! possibly even brain freeze the good news is I stumbled across something called "quote my website" I've had three people contact me an give me some prices an a little insight to what I'll need so now I just have to make some desicions and find the finance, sounds really simple right !!!

I think there's similar web like www.rentacoder.com that offers you heaps of website designers who will bid on your job. It definitely makes the cost lower.
i suppose craigslist.org is not a bad site to look for web designer as well.
I'm starting an e-business myself so good luck with your project!

oDesk is another one that's great - heaps of people, and they've been rated by all the other users.

You can get people to do anything from Photoshop work to full blown website design.

Hello joanne,

Good on you for getting out there and having a go!

There are some fantastic FREE resources on http://south-gippsland.net if you want to be able to build a website yourself or need some good tips to get free website traffic....along with video tutorials etc.

It is certainly possible to build something yourself, but will it be a good shopfront for your business? Natalie already mentioned using wordpress or blogger as a platform. Wordpress is my preference for many reasons...and simple sites always work the best...take a look at google for instance.

No matter what you do, a website needs traffic. Just because you have one, does not guarantee you will get found by anyone at all. But once the right website is up-and-running, if you are prepared to do whatever it takes to attract people to your site, then you have more chance for success.

Website designing is only one aspect of what you need...
- professionally written website copy,
- implementing the right strategies so your website will be recognized by the search engines, and
- effective marketing tools,

...are just some of the important aspects you might like to consider.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you well.

Hi there Joanne try Google very simple, basic and easy to follow. The help and tutorials are easy to understand and follow, I would fully recommend any Google software.
